Go Skiing in Oukaïmeden

Standing at the top of a ski lift at 3273 meters above sea level and taking in the awe-inspiring views of snow covered mountains and picturesque valleys below, it is hard to believe you are in subtropical Africa.

High in the Atlas Mountains and less than two hours from Marrakech, Oukaimeden is Morocco’s largest ski resort and boasts the highest ski lift in Africa. Its distinctive African flair makes this a welcome change from American and European ski resorts. Conditions can be a gamble though, with January and February being the best months to ski. The resort was originally built by the French, however Oukaimeden is currently being surveyed by international resort planners to improve the facilities.

Rental equipment is available from the resort at very reasonable rates although visitors should not expect state of the art ski equipment. Many local visitors come to the area merely to enjoy the sight of the snow and so the slopes are generally not crowded.

When conditions are good, skiers can enjoy 20km of groomed runs, with the longest being 3km. Donkeys are available to ferry riders to some of the steeps and chutes not served by lifts. There are many activities available to keep visitors entertained when conditions are less than favourable. Hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, golf, camel rides and even surfing are possible. The area is a convenient base to explore the prehistoric stone carvings and rock art in the area. Some of these sites can be hard to find so it is advisable to take along a guide.
